Why the Name ‘Janie Appleseed?’

The name Janie Appleseed was inspired by American pioneer Johnny Appleseed who helped grow our developing nation by nurturing apple orchards across our country at the turn of the 19th century, Janie Appleseed Network is helping spread adoption of health information technology in the form of personal health records so our nation can evolve its healthcare system in the 21st century.

Janie Appleseed Network helps consumers take better care of themselves and others by cultivating up-to-date health literacy and the computer skills needed to integrate emerging personal health record technology into daily life. Without these new capabilities and life practices, the positive health outcomes expected from our nation’s investment in health information technology will not be fully attained.

Janie Appleseed Network views the consumer as a key stakeholder in improving our nation’s healthcare system. We represent and advocate for consumer requirements to be included in the development of current and future Health Information Technology (HIT) standards. In this way, we are planting the seeds needed to grow new types of learning health systems that lead to healthier people for our nation in the future.
